"Grief and Grit(s)"

Nothing prepares you for caring for your elderly loved ones. Nothing prepares you to fight for those loved ones in the midst of a global pandemic, either.

This is the story of a mother’s love and a daughter’s fight—for truth, dignity, and compassion when the world was at its darkest.

A SOUL-TOUCHING STORY

WAY MORE THAN A MEMOIR

No matter who we are, where we’re from, and what we’ve experienced, we all have one important thing in common: we’re all aging, minute by minute.

And yet, some of the most belittled, ignored, and vulnerable people in our society are the elderly. Nothing put this on display more fully than the COVID pandemic.

And as the stories of heroism and horror come to light, it’s our responsibility to reflect on what happened and—more importantly—what we’ve become as a society.

In her stunning literary debut, Marsha Gray Hill takes on these questions through the eyes of both mother and daughter.

Tragic and triumphant, harrowing and heart-wrenching, Grief and Grit(s)

sheds light on the messy parts of love that we don’t like to talk about—and the incredible blessings that lie within those lessons.

ABOUT MARSHA

Marsha Gray was born and raised in Kinston, North Carolina, before marrying her husband, Gregg, and becoming Mrs. Marsha Hill in 1976. Her adventurous life of raising five children alongside her eldest son’s burgeoning professional tennis career included lots of love and way too many drives down I-95 in a massive Southwind camper.

Fifteen grandchildren later, Marsha is still a southern girl, splitting her time between Georgia and Florida. Her family is her pride and joy, and while caring for her mother throughout the COVID pandemic, she experienced firsthand what it’s like to advocate for a deteriorating parent.

This experience inspired her to become a voice for compassion and human dignity.

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING

Just a few words from those who've already finished this powerful, heartfelt story.

CAMILLE A.

"Marsha's book brought tears to my eyes on multiple occasions.

Marsha's ability to touch your soul and speak to the challenges of taking care of aging parents is remarkable.

She discusses the unfortunate truth of how so many lost family to COVID while also paying tribute to the remarkable person her mother was.

We all deserve dignity at the end of our lives, but Adaline and so many were robbed of that. The book brought tears to my eyes on multiple occasions.

This is a must-read for anyone who has every loved and lost.

SUE B.

I was captivated by the remarkable tale of a resilient Southern Christian matriarch & the depth of her well-lived life.

"The book beautifully portrays the intricate dynamics of her family relationships, drawing readers into a world of rich Southern family values and traditions.

It sheds light on the profound impact of COVID-19, leaving behind a poignant legacy that has deeply affected her family.

Marsha's storytelling is truly awe-inspiring, evoking a powerful sense of admiration and reverence for her mother's journey and the enduring spirit of love and resilience."

SOFIA C.

"An extraordinary testament to the power of love and the complexities of life.

Through her heartfelt storytelling, Marsha invites us into the world of a Southern family bound by deep-rooted traditions and values.

Amidst the backdrop of a devastating pandemic, Marsha's honest portrayal of her family's experience with COVID-19 leaves a lasting impact, reminding us of the fragility of life and the strength of the human spirit.

Her book is a moving tribute to love, loss, and the resilience that emerges from the layers of our shared experiences."

KATHY C.

"There is a special bond between a mother and daughter that can never be broken, even in death.

Some of us lucky ones call our Mom, our best friend; however, a very few call our Mom's our baby. How blessed they are, for they are the ones that come full circle of the mother daughter relationship.

This book is one of such. In this book you'll follow the love of how one daughter and her family tried to keep COVID from stealing the matriarch of their family.

But in the end it did. It, however; did not steal the love, and compassion, but created a legacy of one God fearing Christian lady that will always live in their hearts."

SHAWNA K.

"An incredible story that spoke straight to my soul as both a mother and a daughter.

"It's reminded me about the unconditional connection that we have, and that no matter what we go through in life, we always have each other... all the way to the very end.

Highly recommend this book if you are committed to strengthening every relationship in your life - while you still can".
